I am passionate about financial literacy after being on the other side of the checkbook during my years as a young adult after high school.  I enlisted in the Army in 2008 and traveled the world without the need to balance my funds or prepare for the future.  Fast forward to now, I am combat veteran, a husband, a father of three young boys, and licensed in three states to sell life insurance (TX, CA, WA).  I am currently attending college to further my financial knowledge with a BA in Finance, and striving to help as many people and their families prepare for the unknown burden of what tomorrow might bring when a loved one is injured, falls ill, lost, or simply just securing a safeguard to a future tax free retirement.

They make their income through commissions from a percentage of the premium.  You’re not bill immediately after you’ve bought a policy, the insurance company you’re buying your policy from will pay the commission.  The more policies an agent sells, the more income they'll make in commissions. "Non-captive agents" are usually only paid from commissions. But a "captive agent" might get a regular salary from the company they work for, with less in commissions, and their salary might be even lower if marketing and administrative costs are performed by the employer.  Each state regulates its insurance prices, which means companies file their price list of all the policies they sell with the state insurance department. This regulation means an insurance policy can’t quote a higher price than if you’d just gone directly to the company itself.  It's important to get a range of quotes from an agent so you can see they’re not just pitching you the priciest options when it comes to your policy, but are genuinely looking to get you the best policy.

  • Understanding of your situation and the financial path you’re on.   Are they hearing who you are, your goals, and what you need coverage for?
  • Knowing what you don’t need. Be sure they’re not trying to oversell things to you.
  • Answering your questions. Life insurance is complicated enough, so your concerns should be addressed, no matter how small they may seem.
  • They will put together personalized advice for you, with a written report for you to summarize your call, along with their advice on the sort of life insurance that could work for you.  -This report is yours to consider before you make any decisions.  If they’re pushing you to make a decision on that first call, it’s too soon!
  • Ensure they are licensed to sell insurance in your state.  They should willingly disclose probably commission.
  • Qualifications matter (but try not to go on about it too much). The designations after their name could be one of the following, but don’t let it give you a false sense of security as to how qualified they are.  Many firms have the resources and backing of highly certified individuals to discuss policy options before proposed quotes to insure client needs are met.

CLU – Chartered Life Underwriter

        ChFC – Chartered Financial Consultant

 CFP – Chartered Financial Planner

                         RR/ RP – Registered Representative/ Registered Principal

   CIC – Certified Insurance Counselor

The point is is, don’t get caught up on these qualifications.  You can be prepared by knowing what they mean, but if they’re still trying to oversell your needs (or just not hearing what you know you want), they’re not doing their job!
